UC Berkeley Astronomer Steve Stahler, Professor Daniel Matt and I will be speaking at UCB on Tuesday, Nov. 1st, 2011 at Sutardja Hall at 7:00 PM on the topic of "How Did the Universe Begin - And Did It Matter? Science and Religion Tackle the Biggest Questions of All." The discussion is sponsored by the Astronomy Department of UCBerkeley and is part of the Bay Area Science Festival.
Modern science offers us a startling and highly detailed account of cosmology—the origin of everything. This same issue has occupied religious thinkers for thousands of years. Their insights are very different from those of science, but can also be beautifully complementary. In this evening's unique Wonder Dialogue, an astrophysicist, a Jewish scholar, and a Buddhist monk bring their own perspectives to these vast, yet highly personal questions.
Dr. Steven Stahler is a Research Astronomer at Cal, who has written on the creation of stars; Dr. Daniel Matt is a former Professor of Jewish Spirituality at the Graduate Theological Union, who is currently translating the classic of Kabbalah, The Zohar, and Rev. Heng Sure, PhD., Director of the Berkeley Buddhist Monastery, and Adjunct Professor of Buddhism at the Pacific School of Relogion at the Graduate Theological Union.
